The first day of every new year enjoys an abundance of commemorations and holy days.

Besides New Year's Day in much of the world, Catholics also celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, and the World Day of Peace, which this year sees its 57th edition.

In the video above, produced by Gabriela Ceraso and Andrea Moneta, we witness the juxtaposition of the consequences of peace and war, offering a visual reminder of the devastation wrought by conflict.

Pope's 2024 Peace Day message

For his 2024 World Day of Peace message, Pope Francis has chosen to reflect on the theme "Artificial Intelligence and Peace".

He explores the ethical dimension of new AI technologies, saying they are revolutionizing all spheres of human life.

"New digital tools are even now changing the face of communications, public administration, education, consumption, personal interactions and countless other aspects of our daily lives," he notes.

The Pope also urges world leaders to put in place policies that ensure AI development will "ultimately serve the cause of human fraternity and peace."

"It is my prayer at the start of the New Year that the rapid development of forms of artificial intelligence will not increase cases of inequality and injustice all too present in today’s world, but will help put an end to wars and conflicts, and alleviate many forms of suffering that afflict our human family," he said.

As the world marks a new year, Pope Francis prayed that all peoples might embrace new technologies in a way that turns them into forces for good.

"May Christian believers, followers of various religions and men and women of good will work together in harmony to embrace the opportunities and confront the challenges posed by the digital revolution and thus hand on to future generations a world of greater solidarity, justice and peace."
