Pope Francis on Sunday expressed his spiritual closeness to the families of victims in recent fighting that erupted between Azerbaijan and Armenia, urging both parties to respect the ceasefire in view of a peace agreement. He was speaking to pilgrims gathered in Saint Peter's following the recitation of the Angelus prayer.

“Let us not forget that peace is possible when weapons are silenced and dialogue begins! And let us continue to pray for the suffering people of Ukraine and for peace in every land bloodied by war.”

Severe Flooding in Italy

The Pope then mentioned the Marches region of Italy hit in recent days by torrential rains and catastrophic flooding, assuring the people of his prayers for those who died, the injured and their families, noting the suffering also caused by the damage to homes, roads, and structures. He prayed that the Lord may give strength to the communities there.
