Pope Francis appoints new bishop for the diocese of Youngstown, USA

Pope Francis appoints Rev. David J. Bonnar as the new Bishop of Youngstown in the United States.

Pope Francis on Tuesday appointed Rev. David J. Bonnar as the new Bishop of Youngstown, Ohio (U.S.A.).

Father Bonnar is a priest of the Diocese of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania), and has been until now parish priest of St. Aidan Parish in Wexford.

Curriculum vitae    

Bishop-elect David J. Bonnar was born on 5 February 1962 in Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania).  In 1984 he received his Baccalaureate from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. He completed his ecclesiastical studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome as a student at the Pontifical North American College (1984-1988).

He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Pittsburgh on 23 July 1988.

After priestly ordination he carried out the following roles: Parish Vicar of Saint Vitus Parish in New Castle (1988-1992); Saint Rosalie Parish (1992-1996) and Saint Thomas More Parish in Pittsburgh (1996-1997); Director of Vocations, Rector of the Seminary and Director of the Office for Permanent Deacons (1997-2002); Parish Priest of Saint Bartholomew Parish in Pittsburgh (2002-2007); Dean (2005-2007); Secretary for Parish Life and Episcopal Vicar for the Clergy (2007-2009).  He was also a member of the Pastoral Council (2004-2006) and the National Advisory Board of the US Bishops' Conference (2020,) and editor of The Priest magazine (since 2014). He was pastor of Saint Bernard Parish in Pittsburgh (2009-2020) and Saint Aidan Parish in Wexford (since 2020).
