Pope Francis appoints new Archbishop to the Archdiocese of Melbourne

Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Peter Andrew Comensoli to succeed Archbishop Denis James Hart as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Melbourne, Australia.

Bishop Comensoli was born in 1964 in Bulli, New South Wales, Australia. He studied business at the University of Wollongong and worked in the banking industry for four years. He was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Wollongong in 1992 after entering the seminary 6 years earlier.

After ordination, he served as Parochial Vicar at Unanderra (1992), and the Cathedral of Wollongong (1992-1995), and as Parish Administrator in Shellharbour (1995-1996).

In 2000 he completed a Licentiate in Moral Theology at the Alphonsian Academy in Rome.

After returning to Australia, he was again Parochial Vicar in West Wollongong (2000) after which he served as Diocesan Chancellor (2000-2006).

From 2006-2010 he pursued a Master’s Degree (St Andrew’s University) followed by a Doctorate in Moral Philosophy (University of Edinburgh) in Scotland. He then became Professor at the Catholic Institute in Sydney, and served on the Presbyteral Council.

He was ordained an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Sydney and served for six years as its Apostolic Administrator.

Bishop Comensoli became the Bishop of Broken Bay, in 2014.
