Several changes in the leadership of various women's religious congregations across the world due to General Chapters held recently have consequences on the UISG leadership.

The UISG statutes provide that the president of the union must be a superior general of a congregation that is a member, and the organization has announced its new leaders.

Although the new posts were made known through the UISG website on 20 September, their terms took effect on 4 September 2023 and run until May 2025 when the UISG will hold its Assembly.

The new president is Sr. Mary Barron, OLA, the Superior General of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles, who was formerly the Vice President and takes over from Sr. Nadia Coppa, ASC, the former president.

Also, Sr. Graciela Francovig, FI, Superior General of the Hijas de Jesús, will now serve as Vice President of the union.

Advocating for synodality in religious life

Sr. Mary Barron, addressing the UISG said, “It is a great honor to be asked to serve as the president of UISG at this particular moment in time."

She also stated that “as female Consecrated, we are growing in our awareness of the need for this interconnected global Sisterhood that lives deep solidarity and communion, collaborating with and furthering the mission of God in the world, particularly among those peoples who are often most forgotten by societies.”

The new president believes that at this moment, consecrated life is strongly called to synodality.

She concluded that “as the global Church prepares for the upcoming Synod in Rome, it is a great privilege to be able to participate in the Synod as President of UISG”.

Appreciation for Sr. Nadia

The organization expressed its appreciation for the hard work and devotion of Sr. Nadia Coppa, ASC, during her tenure as the UISG President.

While expressing appreciation to the new president and vice-president for taking on these duties in support of religious life across the world, the UISG pledged its prayerful support for Srs. Mary Barron and Graciela Francovig as they lead the UISG.
