Ten entities, including foundations, religious associations - including a Catholic one - universities and non-governmental organisations, were banned on Tuesday, February 27, by the Nicaraguan Ministry of the Interior.

President Daniel Ortega’s government justified the decree that strips the non-profit associations of their legal status, citing “violations and irregularities in the presentation of financial statements.”

The registration of the the "Maria Guerrero" University of Administration, Commerce and Customs was also cancelled.

More than 3,500 political parties, associations and NGOs have been suppressed in Nicaragua since 2018.
