Police officers killed in Iraq bomb attack

At least nine police officers have been killed in a terrorist attack in the north of Iraq.

By Nathan Morley

The attack took place near Kirkuk, and although no group has said it was behind the atrocity, officials point the finger at the so-called Islamic State group.

The assault began when a bomb explosion targeted a truck transporting police near the village of Safra.

Moments later, there was "a direct attack with small arms".

Police said one attacker was killed and others were being sought.

Numerous attacks

Earlier this week, a roadside bomb killed three troopers near Baghdad, and ISIS claimed responsibility.

The so-called Islamic State was driven from its last territory in 2019, but the United Nations recently warned that it remained a ‘persistent threat’.

Last month, another attack on a secluded northern Iraqi military post killed four soldiers near Kirkuk.
