Spanish Cardinal Fernando Aguilar dies at age of 89

Cardinal Fernando Sebastián Aguilar has died in the Spanish city of Malaga on Thursday at the age of 89.

The Archbishop Emeritus of Pamplona y Tudela died on the evening of 24 January. He had suffered a stroke a few days before.

Cardinal Fernando Aguilar’s body will be buried in the Chapel of the Most Holy Sacrament in Malaga’s Cathedral of the Incarnation.

Funeral rites will be celebrated in the Cathedral on Saturday at noon.

Fernando Sebastián Aguilar served as the Bishop of Leon in Spain from 1979 to 1983. He was the Archbishop of Pamplona y Tudela from 1993 until his retirement in 2007.

Pope Francis appointed him Cardinal-Priest of Sant’Angela Merici on 22 February 2014.
