Pope meets with President of the Republic of Cyprus

Pope Francis and other members of the Vatican Secretary of State meet with the President of the Republic of Cyprus on Monday, speaking among other things of the resumption of the reunification process.

Pope Francis met with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, His Excellency Mr. Nicos Anastasiades on Monday morning in the Apostolic Palace. After meeting with the Pope, Mr. Anastasiades then met with Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, together with the Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Gallagher.

A communiqué from the Holy See Press Office said that the topics making up their discussion were the “good relations between the Holy See and the Republic of Cyprus”; the “anticipated resumption of talks” promoting the “reunification process”; the reception of and challenges related to migrants; religious freedom; minority rights; and the situation both in the Eastern Mediterranean region and in the region as a whole, “highlighting the need to promote peace and stability through dialogue and negotiation, respecting human rights and international law”.
