Pope Ireland: Capuchin Day Centre, awaiting Pope Francis' visit

When Pope Francis makes his private visit to the Capuchin Day Centre during his two day journey to Ireland, he will be going to a place, that for decades, has been a lifeline to people in need in Dublin.

The Capuchin Day Centre in the heart of the city provides over 700 meals each day and over 1500 food parcels each Wednesday to the homeless and poor of Dublin.

Helping the needy

It also offers a medical service, chiropody clinics, an optical service and advice and information clinics. The needs of the homeless are also prioritized.

Greeting the Pope on his arrival on Saturday will be Capuchin Friar, Brother Kevin Crowley, founder of the Day Centre and his team.

Br Kevin has seen Ireland during the most difficult of times including recession in the 1980’s and most recently the financial crisis that hit the country.

Joy at Papal Visit

Speaking about the Pope’s upcoming visit, the Capuchin Friar said “we were absolutely and really thrilled and still are and particularly the homeless people, they are so much looking forward to it; it’s a great honour for them and a great boost for them.”

Noting Pope Francis’ concern for the marginalized and homeless, Br Kevin stressed that at present not enough is being done to provide families in Dublin with affordable housing and that it is very hard for young couples to get on the property ladder.
