Pope sends condolences on death of Cardinal O'Brien

The Holy Father says he is "saddened" to learn of the death of Cardinal Keith Patrick O'Brien, who died on Monday at the age of 80, and commended his soul "to the merciful love of God our Father".

Pope Francis on Tuesday expressed his condolences upon the death of Cardinal Keith Patrick O'Brien, who died on Monday at the age of 80.

In a telegramme to Archbishop Leo Cushley of St. Andrews and Edinburgh, the Pope said he was "saddened" to learn of the Cardinal's death.


He also commended Cardinal O'Brien's soul "to the merciful love of God our Father".

I was saddened to learn of the death of His Eminence Cardinal Keith Patrick O’Brien, and I offer heartfelt condolences to you, his family and all who mourn his passing. Commending his soul to the merciful love of God our Father, and with the assurance of my prayers for the Archdiocese of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh, I cordially impart my Apostolic Blessing as a pledge of peace and consolation in our Lord Jesus Christ.
