On 27 March 2019, the Holy See announced the apostolic voyage of Pope Francis to Mozambique, Madagascar and Mauritius, which will take place from 4 September 10 September 2019. Pope Francis will visit the cities of Maputo in Mozambique, Antananarivo, in Madagascar and Port Louis in Mauritius. For their part, the people of Madagascar are already mobilising themselves to welcome the Holy Father.

An important infrastructure to install

Last weekend, President Andry Rajoelina, accompanied by senior officials of the Catholic Church in Antananarivo, went for a meeting in Soamandrakizay, Androhibe, where an important structure will be erected in readiness for the Holy Father’s visit. On this occasion, President Rajoelina announced that construction would begin within a few days. The site will be where the Pope will celebrate Holy Mass on 8 September, feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

A historic visit

The apostolic journey of Pope Francis to the world’s fourth largest Island will be the second visit after Pope Saint John Paul II made an apostolic trip, 1989, to several southern African countries, including the island of Madagascar.
