Pope Francis on Saturday thanked representatives of the Italian Air Force for a century of dedicated service, innovation, and sacrifice.

During an audience in the Vatican, the Pope especially highlighted the Force’s historical evolution, its commitment to peace, and he encouraged it to maintain a human-centric perspective in the face of technological advancements.

Scientific progress

Acknowledging the significant scientific progress made by the Italian Air Force over the past hundred years, the Holy Father underlined the importance of ensuring that this progress serves humanity's well-being.

“It should be emphasized that research, innovation, and new technologies should never be subordinated to power interests or harmful uses but should always be directed towards the integral good of humanity, the development of all peoples, and greater justice,“ he said.

“On this path, your service remains a precious contribution to peace.”

Service beyond warfare

The Pope commended the Air Force for its evolving role beyond traditional warfare noting that while historically military forces were primarily engaged in times of conflict, today's Air Force members find themselves involved in diverse contexts.

He mentioned flight safety and rescue, cooperation with International Organizations for humanitarian missions and peace support, and the service provided during severe natural disasters, “also in favour of less-equipped countries and more disadvantaged populations.“

“I also think of your contribution in health emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw you engaged in keeping hospitals operational, supporting the vaccination campaign, and ensuring the aerial transport of patients,“ he said

“It is a commitment that honours you, revealing the depth of your service to the country, extended to the larger human family.”

Pope Francis also recalled the Air Force's role in defending, welcoming, assisting, and serving people and the men and women of the Force for their passion, commitment, courage, and motivation, qualities, he said, that often lead to sacrifices in the line of duty.

Defense of peace and justice

“In this time, when humanity is tormented by terrible conflicts,“ Pope Francis concluded, “the safeguarding of this human richness represents the best guarantee that your commitment is always directed towards the defence of life, justice, and peace.“

“Your commitment must always be directed towards the defence of life, justice, and peace.”
