Portuguese President sends message of encouragement to WYD pilgrims

Portugal's President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa shares with Vatican News a video message for young pilgrims attending World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon.

Pope Francis’ arrival at the Figo Maduro airport in Lisbon, Portugal, on Wednesday was eagerly received by President Marcelo Rebelo De Sousa.

The Portuguese President has accompanied the Pope for all of his public events during his first two days in Lisbon.

On the sidelines of the Pope’s meeting with university students on Thursday, President De Sousa gave a video message to Vatican News which was intended for pilgrims taking part in World Youth Day.

He described the WYD encounter as "a unique experience in one's life," recognizing the significance of meeting the Pope in person.

The President also acknowledged Pope Francis’ exceptional role in an increasingly challenging world.

"This Pope is a very special person in this very difficult world," President De Sousa said, emphasizing the profound impact the Pope has on the lives of countless individuals across the globe.

He also expressed his gratitude to the many young pilgrims who have come to Lisbon.

President De Sousa also extended a warm welcome to the many pilgrims who have flocked from 143 countries to attend the six-day World Youth Day gathering in Lisbon, Portugal.

Youth empowering the future

President De Sousa also spoke about how the youth are going to be changing the world on account of their faith.

As young people return to their homelands after the World Youth Day, they will carry with them a plethora of meaningful experiences and life-altering testimonies.

These stories will undoubtedly reshape the way they view the future and the world they inhabit.

President De Sousa highlighted the profound impact these encounters can have on young people across the globe, fostering a new perspective that could lead to positive changes in their communities and beyond.

As the Pope's Apostolic Journey to Portugal continues to unfold, the atmosphere in Lisbon remains charged with excitement and anticipation, as the pilgrims eagerly await their encounters with Pope Francis.
